Artist Statement

“Stop waiting around for creative muse to strike, start work immediately” – David Hockney.

Sketching-at-Long-Reef-with-Debbie-MackinnonI am constantly looking for fresh adventures and new ways to express them in a painting. I live within walking distance from the sea and record my contact with the natural world every day with my dog Sunny. This regular connection with nature provides a constant source of imagery and inspirations.Drawing daily from life is an obsessive and crucial aspect of my art practice.

On my creative journey I need to push my materials and experiment with how to translate the essence of a scene onto paper, board or canvas. By drawing ‘en plein air’ I am able to record a moment, responding to the landscape, creating my own interpretation of the view that I see and feel.

The magic begins when I take these en plein air drawings into the studio . The landscapes evolve when I take from the drawings, working them into lush layered oil paintings on board. Through these colourful artworks you are taken to a place to connect with all of nature’s positivity and healing.

Recent artworks have been inspired by my explorations on the rock platforms and coastal waters around Australia. These new artworks are a combination of visited places from the present and experiences from my past. Responding to these textured lands through the exploration of colour shape and light.

opening-night-with-Debbie-MackinnonWorking alongside fellow artist Debbie MacKinnon has developed our creative practice into a unique and interesting direction. When working collaboratively you must leave your ego behind and trust and enjoy the journey into the unknown landscape. It offers a new perspective that can be enjoyed by the artists and by the collector.

In this fast paced modern world, we are losing our connection with the natural world. When being in nature, or even viewing scenes of nature, it is proven to reduce anger, fear, and stress and to increase pleasant feelings. My landscape paintings recreate that connection with nature, a joyous one that heals, soothes and restores. My landscapes are escapes into a quiet world where reality dissolves and you can live in the moment. You can almost feel the sun on your back and taste the salt from the sea.
